Spanish Tapas Restaurant, Glebe

Tapas Banquet!

A mate of mine reached his quarter of a century milestone and his lovely gf organised a surprise birthday dinner at Spanish Tapas in Glebe!

This restaurant is located a short walk from Broadway shopping centre and not too far down Glebe point road so you are unlikely to miss it.

The atmosphere of the place was like most Spanish places I've been to and had the usual exposed brick walls, candle like lighting, wooden seats and tables and a real rustic feel.

Given the large group that we had gathered tonight, we had to order the set menu banquet which costs between $50-$75 per person (depending on how many tapas you want per person) but generally it includes unlimited Sangria and Soft drinks as well as a variety of Tapas and Paella.

Jug of Coke

Sangria- always the first to go =)

We started with a basket of herb and garlic breads as well as bowls of garden salad. These were nothing special with some of the bread a bit burnt on the edges, but otherwise exactly what you would expect from it. The garden salad was a nice light start to the meal but again, was nothing special.

Next came the tapas! The best thing about tapas is the large variety that you can order! It's great when you have a large group of people eating as you get to try so many more dishes! We were allowed to choose 1 tapas per person, and I'm not sure who chose the tapas because after looking at the menu later, there were soooooo many tapas choices that I would have picked that weren't :( Alas, that is the dilemma when sitting when sitting on one end of a very long table.

The tapas we did get to try were:

Patatas bravas (potatoes in spicy tomato sauce)

Patatas al ajillo (potatoes in garlic sauce)

Not sure exactly why we got 2 potato dishes, but they both tasted quite nice, however, I am bias as I am a big fan of roast potatoes.....

Alas de pollo al ajillo (chicken wings in white wine & garlic sauce)

Chicken wings had a nice sauce and a nice golden brown look, however the chicken was a bit tough, kinda like they were too dry.

Gambas al ajillo (garlic prawns)

Easily the best tapas of the night, but again, I am known to be bias towards garlic prawns...the aromatic garlic transfers to the oil and it becomes a pot of oily garlicy goodness that is best mopped up with some bread (just don't think about how unhealthy it is, haha). One note is that the prawns appeared to be of the frozen variety.

Calamares fritos (deep fried calamari)

Nothing special about the Calamari, cept that the coating was a bit sparse at places and I would have liked it to be a bit more on the crunchy side.

Chorizo (grilled spanish sausage)

Standard tapas fair, and did not dissapoint. Chargrilled to perfection.

The tapas I would have loved to try are:
Codornices a la plancha (grilled quails) Almejas al vino blanco (pippies in a white wine sauce) Mejillones a la marinera (mussels cooked in tomato sauce) Pulpo a la plancha (BBQ octopus)
ChampiƱones al ajillo (garlic mushrooms)
Gambas a la plancha (BBQ prawns)

Haha, yes, I know it is a long list, but they sound sooooo yummm!!

We also got one Chicken Paella and one Seafood Paella.

Seafood Paella

Chicken Paella

To be honest, I have never been a big fan of Paella, but people always order it as there are always some people who are absolutely adore it. I usually have a spoon or 2 to try the taste and leave it for the others to consume. These Paellas were similar to other ones I tried and nothing to write home about.

Service was great and dishes came out steadily for the whole table, Jugs of drinks were refilled promptly and the waiter even helped us to cut and serve our cake with no extra cake-age charge.

Overall, a great and tasty birthday banquet!

Cruiser Restaurant and Bar, Thredbo

Quick lunch at Thredbo

For those of you that don't know, I love going to the snow to snowboard. It's one of those things where I really don't care how much it costs cos it makes me happy....

Anyways, the other weekend past, I went to Thredbo with Ozsnow adventures. Really budget style food, accommodation and travel, but it didn't mind so much since the snow is the real star of the show.

Whilst at Thredbo, I had 2 lunches. One of them was at the River Inn near the Friday flats area. Ozsnowadventures gave us coupons there for $15 bistro meals + can of drink. The meal wasn't too bad, although one of my friends chicken schnitzels was semi raw....

Thus on the second day we decided to eat near the Cruiser lift. Apologies for the lack of photos as I spent most of my memory on snowboarding photos and videos, ahha. But I did remember to take a photo of my meal.

My friends ordered the nachos and a burger respectively and they judged them as being of average quality but pricey. But this is pretty much expected given that this Restaurant only operates during ski season. It is also noted that because of this, they do not accept any form of EFTPOS, so remember to carry some cash on you!

I ordered the combination wonton noodle soup being the sucker of an asian that I am. The taste was not bad, as I was quite hungry, however there was an overabundance of corriander and a severe lack of noodles. Nonetheless, the soupy wontons was very gratifying after a few hours on the cold hard slopes....

$17.50

Overall, the restaurant has an excellent location, being right next to the Cruiser lifts and is at the end of the Meritts lift, and was always quite full- even though it was still shoulder season. They have a wide variety of meals available and is not a bad choice for a quick lunch if you're eager to get back on the slopes ASAP! Just remember that the high prices are supporting the snow community and the resort so try not to be too frugal about it :P
